Why Do We Keep Repeating Patterns We’re Already Aware Of?
Have you ever thought…
“I know I do this. I know where it comes from. So why am I still doing it?”
Maybe you know you overthink.
You know you people-please.
You know you second-guess yourself, fear rejection, shut down, overgive or keep falling into the same relationship patterns.
You might even understand exactly where the pattern came from.
So why does it keep happening?
Awareness and subconscious change aren’t always the same thing
Consciously understanding a pattern doesn’t necessarily mean your subconscious has let it go.
At some point, that pattern may have served a purpose.
It may have helped you feel safe, accepted, prepared or in control.
For example:
People-pleasing may have helped protect you from rejection or conflict.
Overthinking may have given you a sense of control when things felt uncertain.
Perfectionism may have helped protect you from criticism or feeling like you weren’t good enough.
Keeping yourself small may have once made it feel safer to belong.
The behaviour might no longer make sense to your conscious mind, but your subconscious can continue returning to what feels familiar.
And this is why simply telling yourself to “stop doing it” can feel so difficult.
Try asking a different question
Instead of:
“Why am I still doing this?”
Try asking:
“What has this pattern been trying to protect me from?”
Then notice what comes up.
You don’t have to force an answer.
You don’t have to immediately change anything.
And you definitely don’t need to turn it into another thing you have to work on.
Sometimes the first shift is simply becoming aware of the pattern in a different way — with curiosity instead of judgement.
The pattern isn’t necessarily the problem.
It may simply be an old subconscious solution that you no longer need in the same way.
And once you can see what it has been doing for you, you create space for something different.
